I’ve been going out for walks in my neighborhood and have been enjoying it more every day. The goal was to get my right calf and ankle stronger but the joy of being outside around fresh air and trees has been a benefit much bigger than I could have ever imagined.
All along I knew a reconnect with nature would be wonderful but now it has become almost magical. Walking along the side of the road with trees and houses on one side and Park Lake on the other I have begun to feel like a kid again. I never thought that could happen and always believed feeling like a kid again was something meant for reminiscing or even escaping from reality.
At 54 now it has been a pleasure to witness a youthful enthusiasm for being outdoors where life feels like a fun adventure with all kinds of possibilities. Admittedly, I have a robust imagination and am a person with a creative personality, but anyone can go outdoors and enter a more relaxed frame of mind.
The other day I noticed a tree I had been walking by for a couple weeks and saw that the tree was hollow at the bottom with some small trees growing inside it. I had seen this tree before and didn’t pay much attention to it but on this day, it intrigued me. Going over to the tree to take a closer look, it pulled me into a world of natural wonder. The hollow trunk and trees growing inside appeared to be a whole city made of wooden skyscrapers inside a wooden enclosure.
By the time my eyes travelled up to see a small opening at eye level, thoughts of the hole being an entrance to a home for a fairy, entered my head. Now I was having a great time full of fairy tales one might expect to have in an enchanted forest, and my attention had been transported to a place full of endless possibilities. Going outdoors for walks has awakened a sense of magic in me and I will be spending more time outside in the days and weeks to come, even when Old Man Winter arrives and covers the landscape with a thick blanket of snow. I encourage you to go outdoors and take some walks and see what you end up getting into, I think you might be surprised.
